The referee counts tags up to 6 as normal however if a team makes a successful pass to a team mate before being tagged they earn a tag back (For example, if a team has been tagged 4 times and the then current player on the ball passes before being tagged the referee will shout “3” to indicate they have earned a tag back.) The countback can only go back to zero. A team cannot earn extra tags by working into negative numbers.
