Intent

At Burghill Community Academy, our intent for the Music curriculum is to nurture a lifelong love of music and to develop students into confident performers, composers, and listeners. We use the Kapow Primary Music scheme to deliver a comprehensive music education that aligns with our ethos, vision, and values. Our curriculum aims to help students appreciate and respect music from diverse cultures and traditions, while developing essential musical skills such as singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing, and understanding musical notation.

Our Music curriculum supports Burghill Community Academy's vision of the 6 Rs:

Reflectiveness: Through musical activities and evaluations, students reflect on their performance and compositional choices, fostering a growth mindset and encouraging them to think critically about their learning.

Relationships: Collaborative music projects and group performances enhance students' ability to work effectively with peers, building strong interpersonal skills and promoting teamwork.

Resilience: Learning to play instruments and perform in front of an audience helps students develop resilience, as they navigate challenges and setbacks in their musical journey.

Resourcefulness: The curriculum encourages resourcefulness by integrating various musical styles and traditions, prompting students to use their creativity and problem-solving skills in their compositions and performances.

Respect: By exploring music from around the world and understanding its cultural and historical contexts, students learn to respect diverse musical traditions and practices.

Risk-Taking: Performing and improvising in front of others involves risk-taking, and the curriculum provides a safe environment for students to take creative risks and express themselves musically.

Implementation

The Kapow Primary Music scheme is implemented through a holistic approach, integrating key musical strands: performing, listening, composing, the history of music and the inter-related dimensions of music. Each unit of work incorporates these strands within cross-curricular topics designed to engage and inspire students.

Condensed Model

For schools with limited time for music education, the Kapow Primary condensed model offers a streamlined version of the curriculum. This model provides a focused approach that maintains the integrity of musical education while accommodating time constraints. It ensures that core musical skills and knowledge are still covered effectively.

Incorporating the Kapow Primary Music scheme, the curriculum is designed with progressive units that build on prior learning through a spiral model. Differentiated guidance and knowledge organizers are used to support all students and track their progress.

Peripatetic Teachers

Peripatetic teachers visiting Burghill Community Academy enrich the Music curriculum by offering specialised instruction and expanding students' musical experiences. These visiting practitioners bring expertise in various instruments and musical styles, providing additional opportunities for students to develop their skills and gain exposure to diverse musical practices.

Assessment

Assessment is an integral part of our Music curriculum. Kapow Primary’s scheme includes both formative and summative assessments to track students’ progress. Each lesson features assessment guidance to evaluate whether students meet the learning objectives, and end-of-unit performances allow for summative assessment. Knowledge organisers help students consolidate their learning and provide a reference for both students and teachers.
